Female LPN reviewing medication before administering to a senior resident

Medication Management

At the Samuel F. Vilas Home, we know how important proper medication management is, especially with seniors. We often hear from families that this is one of the most important and valued services we offer. This is especially true for family members with memory loss and dementia where it can be difficult for them to take their medications regularly. When you choose the Vilas Home, you will never need to worry about your loved one managing their medications accurately.

We work with OmniCare Pharmacy out of Ballston Spa, NY. They deliver the medications right to the Vilas Home in Plattsburgh for all of the residents so families do not need to worry about supplying medications. OmniCare works will all types of insurances and they strive to put a family’s worries at ease.

Trained Staff

We have properly trained staff that help manage the medications for all our residents. Our med techs do their medication passes at 8:00am, 12:00pm, 4:00pm, and 8:00pm daily. Every medication that is prescribed to residents is handled with care and given without fail. We have an Administrator, Case Manager, and LPN on staff that ensures that medication management is done properly every single day.

Compliance

All medication management is done under the supervision of the resident’s primary care provider. The list of medications the resident receives on a daily basis is constantly audited to make sure they are receiving the proper dosages at the proper times. We cannot administer any medications that are not signed off for by a medical professional. Each resident's case manager will ensure that medications are working properly. Doctor visits are done regularly to ensure that medications are working, and transportation can be arranged for residents to ensure any necessary appointments are not missed.

Medication Administration

As a licensed adult care home, we cannot administer prescriptions for the residents. For this reason, if any prescriptions need to be injected or otherwise administered, they must be handled by the residents themselves. Our staff is here to assist as much as possible with these treatments.

Common medications that need to be done independently by the resident include:

  • Insulin
  • Eye Drops
  • B-12 shots

If you or your loved one is having difficulty living alone and needs help with daily tasks such as medication management, the Vilas Home may be an option. Contact us to discuss your individual needs or to schedule a tour of our facility.
